Illustration created for my Final Year Project Dissertation. This paper aims to present independent comics and crowdfunding through on-line platforms as a promising and viable way to give more visibility to the discussion of yellow racism in our society. For this, we will use the definitions of Eisner (2010), McCloud (2005), Groensteen (2015) and Cirne (1974) to begin to define what constitutes a comic, and from there, trace the history of the development of this form of art from its most embryonic form with Angelo Agostini's caricatures to the appearance of webcomics in the 2000s. From this background, it is possible to identify the key moments in which the comic books configured an avant-garde movement against a hegemonic power and thus, we discuss the role of the independent comic in the current pandemic context and constants to the East Asian community.
Thank you!
