A Casa das Peregrinações

Info

A Casa das Peregrinações
A Casa das Peregrinações is the Brazilian edition of Sunrye House, a novel by Yoo Eun-sil about a family that loses its income and has to move into a building run by Kim Surye, an elderly woman the family had always looked down on, dismissing the value of the work she'd spent her life doing. Told through the sarcasm of a teenage narrator, the book is really about Seoul's real-estate pressure and the distance between people who inherited wealth and people who worked for it.

The brief put the building at the center on purpose: "Sunrye," the title, translates literally as "pilgrimage", not just a character's name but a way of asking what attitude we choose to live by while our time runs out. Casa Sunrye is where that question plays out, so the cover needed to read as a place, not a portrait: something that could hold the residents' references and still feel like somewhere you'd want to be let in. The brick pattern from the original Korean cover was the one element worth carrying over.

I illustrated the building for the Brazilian cover, working with Camila Gonçalves (Editorial Assistant) and Julia Barreto (Senior Editor) at Editora Pitaya.
